How many portable toilets an event needs
Start with about one unit per 50 guests for an event of up to four hours. Longer events need more, and a bar adds roughly another fifth.
Public events usually need at least one ADA-accessible unit, and about one in twenty for big crowds. If food is being served, add a hand-wash station for every ten toilets, with at least one however small the event is.

Enough units in the wrong place
Even with the right number of units you can still get a long line. Put ten in one block at the far end of a big field and everyone walks to the same spot at the same time. Half-time, the band's break and last call all hit at once.
On a large site, two banks at opposite ends work much better than one big block. Keep them close enough to find but away from the food, and light the path if the event runs after dark.
